2-2a Activity- Taxation Without Representation
This whole-class interactive activity can also be purchased as part of the 2-2 Lesson Bundle: Events Leading Up to the War.
Bring “taxation without representation” to life with a hands-on tax simulation. Students take on the roles of colonists, king, and tax collector as colonial groups must surrender candy in response to tax demands they had no voice in creating. Individual reflection and whole-class discussion help students connect their reactions to the colonists’ grievances against British rule.
Lesson Objective: Students will experience the effects of taxation without representation through an interactive demonstration and explain why having no voice in the British government was a primary grievance for the colonists.
Includes PowerPoint slides to guide the activity and debrief, plus editable tax cards. Through role-play, written reflection, and discussion, students practice historical perspective-taking, cause-and-effect reasoning, and explaining the relationship between taxation, representation, and colonial resistance.
Teachers supply candy and classroom props.
